Do any of the "third party" firmware options for the RCX allow one to control
what is sent through the H8 serial port? If so, then it should be possible to
use an RCX to send/receive any 38KHz IR signal falling within the
bps/baud/processing limits of the RCX.
To take that idea further... if one knew which components to hack in the IR LED
modulation circuitry it should be possible to convert the RCX to 40KHz IR
operation.
Both thoughts could open the door to using the RCX for CIR (Consumer IR)
applications. (Have the RCX turn on a stereo or TV when you enter the room...
make a sound level sensor to adjust the volume on the TV/Stereo during
commercials). Not to mention it would be really cool to use one RCX to issue
commands to a Spybotic, a Mana, another RCX, and a Scout via using the normal
message codes or by changing the protocol on the fly.
I think the "IR" cars are set #4589 ($69.99). The controller looks like the one for the Manas and has 3 channels. The site lists it as "RC", but "RC" could stand for "Remote Control" instead of "Radio Control".
The other two "RC" car sets are #8475 ($129.99) and #5599 ($47.99). Both of
those are "Radio Control". I think the #8475 is the replacement for #5599.

If they use the same IR serial protocol as do the MANAS units or Spybotics,
then yes.
