Hello all,

I was holding off on posting this information because part of my solution
includes the distribution of some of VC's  files that cannot be installed or
moved directly from the CD under WinXP.  However, someone had already discovered
the page before I ever released the address publicly and posted the address
within LEGO's Mindstorms Forums.

Last Saturday, I spent hours varying the files contained in the "pre-install
ZIP" and adjusting the install procedure accordingly to help keep the issue of
software distribution at bay.  Hopefully all I'll see in the mail from LEGO is
my recent S@H order.  Since someone has already posted the link, it's only fair
the rest of the AFOL's know about it, too.  Skip to the links at the end of the
message to escape technical boredom!

The background info:
--------------------

Ideas have been posted suggesting one to copy a working Vision Command
installation from a Win98/Me computer to a  Win2K/XP system.  I tried this twice
on each OS and came to the conclusion that those messages were posted by users
of  Win98/Me systems that were upgraded to Win2K/XP using the "Windows Upgrade"
CD's -- which is completely different than  having an OEM, VAR, or scratch
Win2K/XP installation on a system.  If you bought your computer with 2K/XP
pre-installed, then it's an OEM/VAR/Scratch install.

For the Win2K solution, a little known "Application Compatibility" utility is
used.  WinXP has a version built-in and  installed as part of the OS.
Unfortunately, neither work for installing VC into XP.

The This solution I came up with actually blends the Win2K solution with the idea of copying a working installation.   Without question, there are many people with VC that either don't have access to a 2nd computer.  Or, they have access  to a 2nd computer but lack a convenient way to move the files between computers.  For these reasons, I have created a  "pre-install" ZIP file.

What you need:
--------------

*  RIS 2.0 (update or regular)

*  Vision Command

If you don't own both of these, then the procedure I outline is a waste of your
time.

In the ZIP:
-----------

*  Only files that are extracted from the original setup program during a
complete/full install minus about 300Meg of data which is not compressed on the
Vision Command CD.

*  Vision Command RIS 2.0 Update applied.

*  A replacement shortcut (to VCS.EXE instead of VisionCommand.exe) that
extracts to C:\Documents and Settings\All  Users\Desktop

Not in the ZIP:
---------------

*  About 300Meg of files required (one of the reasons I deliberately chose to
only work with a complete/full install)

*  None of the camera drivers (Logitech cam drivers alone won't work)

*  None of the registry entries (they will be created by the camera setup
program on the VC disc)

*  Any of the RIS 2.0 files

Remember, I'm not responsible for any outcome, pro or con.  Use at your own
risk, etc.  I'm reasonably sure that calling LEGO and expecting them to help
with the install is out of the question.

As always, please let me know if the documented procedure doesn't work for you
so I can update the page(s) appropriately.

- Rob
