I've never had particular problems with it. At high frequencies
it can consume a bit extra battery power (I think due to pushing
magnetic field coils through higher-current transient states).
At worst, it's halved the battery life of the unit. For me, this
isn't a big deal.

I haven't looked at the circuitry in detail, but I would be very
surprised if there were actual short-circuits during the brake
cycle, particularly since brake is the default state of a motor
under the standard firmware. Yes, higher-than-normal currents
from the collapse of the braking magnetic fields flow through the
unit, but this is true whenever you turn off braking. I'd be
quite surprised if these currents came even close to the circuit
tolerances...
