A few months ago I attempted to discover how VC was accessing the Lego cam.

My theory is that VC only cares what driver is being used either due to contract
with Lego or because VC may rely heavily on the Logitech QuickCam SDK.

Here's what I've noted so far:

1)  Cams not made by Logitech don't work as valid VC input source

2)  Other video sources do not work as valid VC input source (tuner cards,
firewire devices, NTSC capture devices)

3)  Several different Logitech cams (not counting the Lego cam) were tested...
ALL worked with the Lego Cam driver and ALL (including the Lego Cam) worked
using the same general USB Logitech driver from Logitech's download website.
ALL appeared to function properly with VC using either driver.

4)  Having a Logitech cam (or Lego cam), a Creative Labs cam, and an NTSC
capture device all plugged into a USB bus, VC fired up using the Logitech or
Lego cam.  (NOTE:  I did not try having multiple Logitech Cams plugged in at
once).

5)  If none of the existing video input sources are cams using Logitech drivers,
VC will display a picture of how to plug in the Lego Cam.

Not yet tested:

1)  Does the Connectix parallel QuickCam VC work with VC?  (Connectix was
Logitech's old name.  Their site still has drivers that support the QCVC
camera.)

2)  What happens if no Logitech or Lego cam drivers are installed in the system
and one attempts to run VC?

3)  Does the video area increase to the full capabilities of the better quality
Logitech cams?  (In NetMeeting, one can notice the difference in resolution
between different cams.)

4)  What happens if more than one cam by Logitech is available in the system
when VC starts?

5)  Can a driver for a different brand cam or video source be re-written to
identify itself as a Logitech product?  If so, would VC recognize it and use it?

6)  Does the Logitech QuickCam SDK follow the same behavior patterns?

If anyone has already done all this, please point out the link to info!

Thanks,

Rob
