My RCX is eating batteries, probably because I can't stop playing
with it. I want to start using rechargeables.
Took a look over the postings on Lugnet, many of which are quite
old and using which I think I could have supported any opinion I
cared to form :-)
Two choices seem to be
a) NiMH. Pros are they are available, can be recharged a lot and
don't leak. Cons are they start at 1.2V (x6=7.8v) instead of
starting with the full 9V, so you don't have the fresh out of the
box power you do with new alkalines. From what I read, they
too end up at about 1V, just like alkalines.
b) Rechargeable alkalines. Pros, cheap and they start with a full
1.5 volts, having a discharge curve more like regular batteries,
ending up down at the 1V mark. Cons, some people have said
they lose effectiveness greatly with each cycle and, worse, when
they get old, they start to leak corrosive stuff which does nothing
good for the RCX.
What's the latest thinking? What are people using?

| (...) I use rechargeable alkalines, Rayovac Renewals, to be exact. You will be amazed at how long they last. I do not wait for them to be fully discharged. It turns out that, with 2 sets, I recharge every couple of months. So far, they have not (...) (23 years ago, 17-Mar-02, to lugnet.robotics)
