I received an additional e-mail with the following content:

I do not have access to sending messages to lugnet but I do follow the
mailings.
I have contacted Melexis about the RCX motor drive IC about 2 months
ago.
They said Lego is not using this IC any more.
I suspect RCX 2.0 is using a newer IC.
The motor driver IC for the RCX 1.5 is still in production though.
I have a copy of the IC data sheet.
If this helps please pass it on.
