I just bought the dark side kit, and am having fun playing with that, but I
noticed on the mindstorms site that the new scout has some interesting new
features.
The most interesting to me was the ability to program the microscout via an
optical connection, and send commands to it.
Firstly I was wondering if this capability has been developed yet, and if so
where I could find information about it.

Well, it certainly can be done - but "program" is a bit of an exaggeration.

The half dozen built-in "programs" that you can access from the Microscout
control panel can be put together into a short sequence and stored in the
microscout's memory.  However, there is no conditional execution - so it's
really not that much use.

Try this web site:

You can easily send VLL commands from a Scout using NQC.

Secondly I was wondering if anyone had examined their VLL protocol to find out
if an RCX with a light hooked up could emulate the protocol...

I don't see why not.

The microscout would be rather useful if it could be programmed!

Well, I found it *very* frustrating.  There isn't even a simple command like
"run the motor forwards" - it does all the annoying beeping and runs for a
little while - then stops...just like it does from the control panel.

Actually, I find the microscout considerably *less* useful than a regular
motor...although I suppose if you were using a scout and *needed* a third
motor, it's marginally better than nothing...but I find it *really* hard
to come up with convincing uses for P mode.

I was wondering what the 'P' mode on the microscout was for... can it be
programmed via the IR tower?

No - you have to put it into 'P' (progam?) mode from it's front panel in
order to send it commands from the scout.  The *only* input is the Visible
Light Link...there is no IR input on the Microscout.
