Hello Everyone,
In India, with a counting system much older than anyone else, people count
as follows:
English Indian
============================= ===================================
100,000 (One Hundred Thousand) 1,00,000 (One Lakh)
1,000,000 (One Million) 10,00,000 (Ten Lakh)
10,000,000 (Ten Million) 100,00,000 (One Crore)
These terms (Lakh, Crore) are actively used in India daily. In fact the
majority of people (say 700 Million) will not know what a million (or a
billion) is. In India we do not have millioners we have either "Lakhsha
Prabhu" (Lord of Lakh[s]) or "Crore Pathi" (Owner of Crore[s]). Lakh and
Crore (in Indian vernacular) is the same for units or larger.
By the way, 1 Billion (1,000,000,000) can be looked in another way:
If you spent money at the rate of $1 per second, after 30 years you will
still have 50 Million (50,000,000) left!
Regards...Das
