This has been noticed before. I would guess that it is the result of an
engineering change on the PC board, well after the molds for the tower
plastic parts had been machined. They (TLG) probably tried it out, found
it worked anyway, and didn't bother to change ($$$) the tooling for the
tower.
I have to think however, that the IR going through the pebbled texture is
being seriously diffused, and probably nowhere near as efficient as if it
were going through the lenses.

Today I was some trying with the Vision Command. I knew camera's are able
to
see IR-light.
When I point the camera at the IR-Tower I see some realy strange. The
IR-LEDS
aren't behind the "plastic lens" . Where is that lens for?
