Hi Ram
No I did not try that panel, but I do not believe it will have enough power to
supply the rcx directly, it may be good to recharge the NiCd inside the rcx in
a reasonable long time and if you live a sunny place.
The best solar cells available on the open market (I mean the ones everybody
can buy and not the ones used on satelites or space devices) offer an
efficiency lower than 17% and as the value of the standard insolation is
100W/square meter it means that you can get out 17 watts of power from one
square meters of solar cells (this is true under direct sunlight in a sunny
day at reasonable good Latitude and only in late spring - summer - beginning of
autumn) and is true for unshielded cells (without any kind of protection
between the cells and the sun).
If you want to be sure to have enough power you have to consider to have only
one third of this value.
The RCX with 3 motor connected may need up to 15 watts of power so if you want
to have working with solar power only you may consider to use from one to three
square meters of solar cells :)
If you want an idea of the costs one single solar cell with 0,5 Watt power
costs about 17DM (about $8.50).
Bye for now

| (...) want (...) three (...) Are you sure about that 15 watt figure? That's quite high - ~1.5 amps @ 9v! I didn't think even the wall transformer they recommend puts out that kind of current. John Barnes (24 years ago, 3-Jun-00, to lugnet.robotics)

| Hi, Did anyone try this (URL) For $12, its seems like a good deal. I have search other sites and it lists for $20 and above. Would this work as a viable power supply for the RCX. Ram (24 years ago, 3-Jun-00, to lugnet.robotics)
