I think it's just an older version of the same motor.

I've bought several 8735 Advanced Power Packs from different sources.

The newer ones had the 71427-002 motor and three that I got from a local toy
shop had obviously been sitting on their shelf for about 3 years and they had
the 71427 motor.

Incidentally, the three old ones were all faulty (jammed or very stiff), so I
called LEGO Service and they replaced them FOC with new motors (71427-002).

I'm pretty sure it's safe to use with the RCX, although you might want to see
if the older motor feels at all stiff compared to the newer one. If you spin
the shaft by hand it should keep spinning for a while on its own.

If it's not right, give LEGO Service a call.

Conrad.

Greetings!

Recently I picked up a lego techo kit (#8266/3038) to add some extra
parts to my collection.  The kit contains, among other things, a motor
and a 6 volt power supply with a single on-off switch.

To try out the new motor I built the simple rover-bot and constructed a
program which turned the motors on for 1 second and then shuts them off.

To my surprise the motor, when used along side an original from the
robotics invention system, operates at slightly different RPM.

The motors look identical.  However upon further inspection I noticed
the part number (enscribed on the motor) is different.  On the OEM motor
the part number is 71427 and the new motor the part number is
71427-002.

A couple of questions:

- Has anyone else experienced this?
- Is it safe to use this motor with the RCX?

Thanks for any info,

-- Gary
