Here's a table of the methods a typical ant colony uses for communication, an
how similar results could be done on the RCX.

An NA in the RCX column means I didn't see a reason why a robot would want to
ever immulate that behavior.

Stimulus          Transmission      Response              RCX

Colony Odor       Chemical          None, if odor matches My SoftBricks code
focal worker          has the concept of a

                                                          be expanded to
                                                          include a colony ID.
                                                          This gets stored in
                                                          memory and can be
                                                          sent to other robots

* Regurgitation and requests for regurgitation were marked as NA because
robots don't eat. But a robots "food" could be data collected by other robots.
In this case a request for regurgitation is a request for data and
regurgitation is sending data. This could be implimented with IR
communications. Large amounts of data could be sent via the SoftBricks
RoboCall Protocol.

** IR port signals can be used both as method of message transmission and as a
location becon. The robot sending the message could send it repeatedly. Robots
receiving the message could also home in on the sender by following the
strength of the IR signal. Additionally, and message could be made stronger or
weaker (as in "I'm in danger!", or "I'm in A LOT OF DANGER!!!") by increasing
or decreasing the frequency at which the message was sent.

  | Folks, I have been following the discussion of robotic ants with great interest. Check out this link: (URL) I couldn't find the link referred to in the article but I think this makes for a wonderful challenge since I have five smart bricks (two (...)
