It should work with no problem.  They make AC->DC converters that have a 9
volt connecter on the end that should work straight away.  I have one I use
all the time for 9V applications.

Hardly the most adventurous avenue of customisation, but has
anybody tried
replacing the 9v battery in the IR tower with an AC/DC adapter?
Is there anything that speaks against doing this?

TIA
