George, I think the NXT would be an excellent way to get your son involved in robotics. And, it should do just fine in that competition. That's pretty much what it was designed for.   brickOS is slower than NQC for sending message
 
I tested two ways with brickOS and NQC, source as below, you will find the NQC can only send about 80 messages in 4s, brickOS can send all 255 messages, but need 20s, in other word, NQC needs 50ms for sending a message, or brickOS needs above 100ms (...) Hi, Once again i am back about RCX and BT-Connection. Receiving messages from the PC via BT to the RCX is OK. But if I send messages from the RCX to the PC with 4800 Baud i get only 4 Bytes.
