Onua
30 pieces, $9.98 (Canada)

The Can

Some improvements were made over the old RoboRider can.  The information label
slides off to reveal the display label- nice!  The lid can be used as a mask
display stand, and has some +-slots for inserting axles.  Unfortunately, none
of the slots is centres and the lid cannot be used as a wheel.  Onua comes with
a mini-CD.  I haven't seen what's on it yet, but I doubt it would be
building-related so I don't care. To me, a CD just seems like a poor excuse to
include less LEGO parts.

About Onua

Onua is intermediate in height between a standard Throwbot and the Blaster
Throwbot.  He has ball-joints at the shoulders, hips, and ankles.  His TECHNIC
function is gear-connected shoulders that swing in opposite directions when a
gear in the back is turned.  The Great Mask included in the set is the Pakari
Mask of Strength.

The Positive

The new Bionicle gearbox is alright, and I am happy that the bottom has a gear
ridge that allows it to be stacked on top of a Throwbot torso. :)  There are
four thick gears included in the set- three small 12-tooth gears, and a large
20-tooth gear.  The 20-tooth gear was included despite the fact it has no
function.  The new claw elements are good for all sorts of robots and monsters,
or as ribs on a skeleton.  I like the overall frigtening look of this set.
Nice posability, and the dancing action is somewhat amusing.

The Negative

My biggest gripe with Bionicle is the way the 'brain' and 'face' elements, once
clicked together, do not pull apart!  Permanently attached LEGO elements is a
scary thought!  The low piece count in Onua is caused by the introduction of
some unnescessary POOP elements.  The new 'arm' element does not seem
justified. If the old arm element had been used, there could have been
ball-jointed wrists.  By the instructions, the wrists do not move.  The feet
are only one piece each, and are new elements.  That's not good, because it
would have been easy to just use the Throwbot head element, the standard joint
socket, and length 2 axles.  Onua, unlike some other Bionicles, does not have
the new ball joint that is not part of a limb.

Reccommendation

Worth buying for both the model and the neat parts (unless you're boycotting
the non-seperable elements or another aspect of Bionicle).

(...) Ignore that- I just tried it, and it's one unit too wide. :( Now I have no idea why that ridge is there- does anyone know what it's for? (23 years ago, 21-Jul-01, to lugnet.reviews)
