Hey all,
Jennifer Boger and I won all 6 Toa and all 6 Turaga at the Potomac Mills (I
hope I spelled that right) Lego outlet store this past weekend.  I expected
terrible sets.  But, I must say I'm pleasantly surprised.  These are *not*
Technic as far as I'm concerned, but overall, they are excellent parts packs
for gears and ball-joints (two of the Toa have a ball with the axlehole,
another has two!)  And they seem to be the perfect meld of Lego and action
figure.  The only two gripes I have is that each Toa is basically the same
design (all with the same torso pieces),as are the Turaga, and none of them
can turn their heads in increments of less than 90 degrees (as shown in
rendered pics, etc).  Other than that, very solid sets.  So, I'll go into
further review on each set individually; Toa and corresponding Turaga
(although not much can be said of the Turaga).

==========
8531 Pohatu
This is an ingenious design/use of the torso piece.  Pohatu has a gear
driven leg, so the torso piece is upside down on him.  He comes with a
boulder, and *two* balls w/ axlehole.  Great color scheme; very rugged
looking.  This one has these neat foot extension pieces, which I've taken a
liking to.  I have some trouble getting Pohatu to stand in dynamic poses, as
his right leg likes to slip out from underneath him.  In a standard pose,
tho, he stands fine.  Cool mask in this set, one of my faves.

8542 Onewa
The tallest Turaga, but also the least stable.  I have problems with him
falling over while operating his weapon arm (a hammer, which is one of my
favorites).  Each Turaga has a right arm that uses a rubber band to move up
and down.  Not a very good mask design, IMO.

==========
8532 Onua
The Bionicle with the most playability, he's one of my faves.  Both arms are
gear driven, with three fingered claws.  I love grabbing other Toa under the
mask with the claws and flipping them up into the air (hee hee :-)  The
black and dark grey look great used in Onua.  This is the shortest Toa, as
his head is mounted in front of the torso, instead of on top.  Onua wears
the best mask, IMO.

8545 Whenua
Itty bitty!  His head comes out the front of his torso, just like Onua.  And
he's got a cool drill type thingy.  Ugly mask tho.

==========
8533 Gali
Toa with two gear driven arms.  Cool hook weapons.  For some reason, I don't
like this one as much as the others.  The mask is transparent, which works,
but I don't like it.  I do love her weapons and colors tho.

8543 Nokama
Great trident, but horrid mask.  The worst as far as I'm concerned.  It
might look better on a bigger Bionicle, but on this little lady it's ugly as
sin.

==========
8534 Tahu
The Toa of fire is great.  Everything about this set is great.  A ball w/
axlehole, a gear driven arm with a flame sword (the coolest weapon, btw),
and a great mask.  And the red, black, and orange is flawless.  Second best set.

8540 Vakama
Cool flame staff, but that's the only cool thing.  This Turaga has an extra
long neck, and an only OK mask.

==========
8535 Lewa
A very cool Bionicle.  Only one arm of this Toa is gear driven.  The color
scheme is good; the axe is cool.  This set comes with one ball w/ axlehole.
The mask to this set is pretty cool too.

8541 Matau
Short little fella, but not the shortest.  The weapon and mask are great
looking.

==========
8536 Kopaka
The best Toa IMO.  Great sword weapon, and cool use of the radar dish as a
shield.  He's got a ball w/ axlehole to boot.  One gear driven arm in this
one.  And the grey, white, and black are cool looking.  The mask isn't up to
par, but the rest of the set, coupled with the playability, makes up for it.
I was having much fun with Kopaka, knocking Lego stuff apart with that sword
(ask Shiri about her Belville castle :-).  Like I said, great set.

8544 Nuju
Cool little Turaga with a nifty pickaxe thing, and the best Turaga mask.

==========

Whew!  Well, there they are.  Hope this helps some of you make up/change
your minds about the Bionicle line.

-Chris

Chris, thanks for the reviews. I have all the Toa, but haven't touched the Turaga yet. Appreciate you taking the time to post your thoughts. (23 years ago, 20-Jul-01, to lugnet.reviews, lugnet.technic.bionicle)

(...) This helps me understand why I've been unable to find Onua in nearby stores! (23 years ago, 23-Jul-01, to lugnet.reviews, lugnet.technic.bionicle)
