Here's some notes on the largest (?) LEGO set ever: 3450 Statue of Liberty.

Like the 3723 Minifig Sculpture, the 3450 comes in a large white box with a
small b&w photo of the statue, a planet earth with basic bricks revolving
around it on the front - but the box is about 8 inches deep to accomodate
the over 2,800 pieces in this set.  The back of the box simply has the LEGO
logo and the "Just Imagine..." slogan.  Inside are four more white boxes
with the numerous parts bags, instructions and the standard grey (48 x 48 I
think) baseplate.  Probably the heaviest LEGO set as well - I'm guessing
over 15 pounds.

There are only two colours: the 'new green' (verdigris) which is almost 99%
of the set with a few yellow bricks and plates for the flame.  Like the
Minifig sculpture the 3450 is 90% bricks, with the rest being plates and
some slopes and other modified pieces for the face and torch.

It took a full evening to build, but it's an impressive structure once
completed.  I must admit it got a bit tedious at points - especially
building the main body section, where the steps get rather repetitive.  The
lack of colour variety didn't help either.  The arms and head area are
definitely the most interesting.

The 2x2 corner bricks seem to be the most common piece in the set, and the
key to creating the 'contours' and textured look of the statue.  Not many
LEGO sets provide a multitude of corner pieces.  The head is the most
intricate section - a creative use of plates, slopes and the 1x2 plates with
1 stud achieves the contours in the eyes and mouth.  But there are places on
the arm, tablet and face that could have been better reinforced.  One needed
to be delicate here as several times I was reattaching areas that
accidentally fell off or were weak.  Now I know why TLG's sculptors use
metal reinforcement rods and glue to hold their larger creations together...

As it stands the completed statue is 2 & 1/2 feet tall, but the base of the
statue is only three bricks deep.  The real Statue of Liberty's base is as
tall, if not taller, than the statue itself.  This will be another job for
the 3033 tubs (BTW, there's a good picture of a larger Statue of Liberty
with the base in DK's ultimate LEGO book).

There are a handfull of bricks left over, including four of the 2x2 'R2D2
body' cylinder bricks - yet they're not used in the instructions.  There are
about 82 steps in the instructions, but no alternate models provided.

If nothing else, this is an impressive sculpture and the best source of
verdigris parts you will get.

Comments or questions anyone?

Chris.
