Just thought I'd ramble on a bit here to kill some time before lunch...
I haven't written up a formal review of these guys for my site yet, but
while I was in Japan last October I managed to get my hands on the 4
Kabaya candy promo Insectoid sets. While I didn't really care for the
regular sets (especially the large ones) at first, I thought these little
polybag-sized sets were pretty cool.
Kabaya sets, for those without exposure to them, generally come in groups
of 4, and include instructions not only for the individual sets, but also
models for each possible combination of sets within a theme. I think this
is pretty darn nifty - it certainly encouraged me to buy complete sets of
4!
Anyway, back to the Insectoids minivehicles. Since they were so small,
they didn't use a lot of overspecialized pieces like the bugeyes and the
robot insect legs - a big plus as far as I'm concerned (though I'm sure
there's something useful lurking in those legs...I just need to *find*
it...) The parts they do have are well used and useful - things like 1x1
cylinders w/fins, 1x2 plates w/attached side 'jet engine', the little 1x2
plates w/two rods (i.e. 'laser guns')...plenty of the *good* 'special
parts' from Space crammed into tiny packages.
The only problem is, the difficulty in getting the sets and their overall
'cuteness' is making it difficult for me to take them apart for
pieces...and besides, they don't take up much room at all...shoulda bought
multiples...
Oh, as for the candy they come packaged with? It's nasty. Sort of
pineapple-coconut-chalk flavored candy stars. Blech.
