I've got both, so here it goes, with playability defined as playing with
something once it's built:
1) 6462 Aerial Recovery is good because you've got a net, a grappling hook, a
motor-trike, dingy and a stretcher. Okay fun for playing. Alternate sets lend
themselves to another helicopter or a watercraft. Aside from rescue, this set
could be transformed for espionage purposes (if you can get past the minifigs'
fluorescent (sp?) orange on white.
There really aren't too many specialized pieces in this set if you can get past
the dingy.
2) 6479 Emergency Response Center has good playability but alternate sets don't
match up to the main set (rarely do they ever) because the pieces seem to be
mostly big and small with not many basic type building pieces. You can make an
interesting land vehicle or a boat, but probably not an interesting version of
both at the same time. This set has some larger plates, notably 2 6x24 greys.
Other notable parts are, the big yellow and blue window, 3x6 low-sloped white
piece with control panel sticker is cool, lots of tools. Also comes with a
platform piece (hollow ugly molded platform [piece] - coined a "HUMPP" or
"HUMP"), and a ramp piece (hollow adjoining ramp piece - coined a "HARP") ,
both of which I consider to be right in there with BURPs and CRAPPs. I would
have rather had the pieces to make my own p&r. This set has more special pieces
than 6462. I'm not crazy about the big black "shuttle-plates" used for the
roof. If you can, check out the box main photo - nothing is hidden.

Since Josh Delahunty gave his permission to use his set review form here on
lugnet, I might do a review here in a few days on 6479.
