Over the weekend, I picked up set 4990 -- the Rock Raiders HQ.

While lots of people complain about the Rock Raiders line being
"juniorized" and having too many specialty pieces, I found the HQ to be
far more pleasing than most of the other sets in the line.

Unlike most of the Rock Raiders vehicle sets, the Headquarters actually
has some very nifty specialty pieces that are easily reusable. My
personal favorites are the "flying buttress" straight and sloped pieces,
which I'm looking forward to using in some of my town designs for the
lofty, airy look. It comes with eight black straight "flying buttress"
pieces, and four sloped grey ones. The only downside to these pieces is
that I think they could have made them a little smaller -- the footprint
is 4x4 studs, when it could possibly have been 2x2. It also has a nifty
sliding crane. I'm not sure if these two crane pieces (the slider, and
the long bar it slides in and out of) have been in any other sets, since
my collection is quite small, but they are nice.

It also has two very tall black columns, which I am pleased about -- I
have ideas for those already, mostly involving important city buildings
and suchlike. There are also two interesting trans-antifreeze hollow
cubes -- I call them safes since I first got some of those kinds of
pieces in the Wild West sets, and those were safes. I'm not sure what to
do with those yet, but they're calling to me. Something about a
spaceship ... *mild grin* I'm not much of a space builder, but the
trans-antifreeze cubes and round 2x2s in this set are really moving me
to build space toys! (:

Teal. Oh, boy, does this set have teal. My only regret is that most of
the teal pieces are the tall sloped columns, rather than basic bricks,
but I can live with that. I wasn't planning on building a whole teal
building. (:

Minifigs: three guys, one chick, not bad, but I'm tired of seeing the
headsets printed on the faces. It makes it much harder to use them in
settings that don't have headsets, or don't have them commonly. (Which
is too bad -- I really like Jet's face, otherwise.)

BURPman: Well, he's BURPman. What else can you say? At least he's got
studs ... a twisted part of me is tempted to drag him into my Wild West
stuff. Ride 'em, cowboy!

Playability: I thought this set offered lots of playability with the
crane, the mobile laser, the two vehicles, and the sliding dumper
arrangement. I'm still twiddling with it on my coffee table. (;

Overall, I'm really pleased with this set. I enjoyed building it, am
still enjoying playing with it, and am inspired by many of the pieces in
it to build more!
