Much is made of what I once was: public servant, doer-of-good, champion of the people. . . Pathetic! It wasn’t until tragedy and trauma brought vision to my once-singular mind that I now see through enlightened eyes. For now I understand that joy and sorrow dwell in the same heart, madness and sanity in the same mind, that death and rebirth are but twins of the same mother! And I will bring this vision to the good people of Gotham. I will be their Prometheus, their bringer of light, that they might truly see how misfortune nestles closely to affluence, how pride and confidence mingle so intimately with fear. . . and revelation’s gift will come easily, justly, and abruptly at the toss of a coin.

Being a huge fan of superheroes and Lego, I’m pretty pleased that the DC/Marvel sets are making a repeat performance. For historical purposes, it ought to be noted that some of the late 2011 sets are variations on sets that were released between 2006-2008: chiefly the 6863 Batwing Battle over Gotham City varies the 7782 Batwing: Joker’s Aerial Assault, the 6864 Batmobile and the Two-face Chase is a close variation on the 7781 Batmobile: Two-Face’s Escape. Finally, the 6858 Catwoman Catcycle City Chase is awfully similar to the 7779 Batman Dragster: Catwoman Pursuit minus the earlier set’s inclusion of a dragster (which was a throwaway model anyway).

I eagerly picked up the 6864 set because I missed the earlier release. This particular set comes with the Batmobile, a bad-guy tow truck and a small bank structure. The main model is, of course, the Batmobile and in comparing this to pictures of the earlier version from the 7781, one can see that they’re very similar. It was a pretty good build with a number of colors under the chassis but a mainly black exterior. As I assembled this model I was struck by how much I miss the classic 1960’s (Lincoln Futura) Batmobile. (If anybody from the Lego Group is listening, PLEASE release a model of this version of the Batmobile!). Batman’s car only seats him and features two flick missiles behind the cockpit. The only annoying thing I found with the Batmobile was the over-sized wings, remove these and you’ve got a pretty cool model.
The other vehicle in this set is the Two-Face tow truck which comes in two-colors (orange and purple, yuck!) and is a pretty sturdy build. Besides the driver seat, there is also a seat to control the swiveling tow arm in the back. Chassis-attached weapons include a couple of flick missiles and what looks like a large Gatling gun (kinda cool).
Rounding things up for the set is a mini bank structure with a walk-in door, teller window, nicely detailed safe and blow-away wall. Despite being a simple structure the design of the bank is very well done with brown-stone style columns and walls.

Figures include black-cowl Batman (these newer sets seem to vary between black and blue cowl), Two-face, two goons and a bank security guard. Set comes with a sticker sheet, one batarang, dynamite and a red crowbar along with some money tiles and two Two-Face coins (I particularly appreciated receiving two of these since one is bound to get lost!). An orange brick-separator also came with the set (I can’t remember when the last time was I got a brick separator with a standard non-freestyle set) along with a textless comic book briefly outlining the Two-face heist, but chiefly promoting the other superhero sets.

The set comes in at around $50 for 531 pieces which I found to be a worthwhile price. The two-tone badguy car is a bit lame and will frustrate any alternate building plans (at least for the symmetry minded) but the set remains a decent standalone purchase.

!!! 4x2ReVu Stats !!!
Rating: Six out of eight studs
Pros: An okay principal Batmobile model with a good assortment of figures for standalone play.
Cons: Bad guy vehicle is a bit wanting (in my opinion) and there are no guns included (what’s a good old fashion bank robbery without guns?).
Walletwise: 531 pieces for around $50 is an acceptable price-per-piece. Watch out where you buy this set, some retail stores jack the price up by anywhere from 15-20%.
