A Holy Grail in the mail.
This is a fantastic set. The review on Pause begins: "Legendary are the
raves about the Mission Commander." They are correct. This set rocks. One
of the best color combos from all the Space lines and awesome functions.
First I'll point out what I like and then suggest things that would have
made it even better.
The opening canopy is terrific. These mechanisms are rarely, IMHO, used very
well in the sets they appear in. They're usually elevators, which is okay
except that's almost all they ever are. However, I love the rotating dome
section in #6990 Futuron Monorail and the opening cockpit in this set are
standout design uses for this piece.
The removable Space Lock-Up storage bay is a wonderful use of four of the
much-coveted blue concave corridor corner pieces. I also liked the opening
roof and rear hatch, although I think four trans-red corridor panels look
better than two blue ones. I thought this was rathy skimpy on TLG's part.
I also used a wider blue plate on top for complete coverage of the roof.
The locking wing mechanisms are great and work well. I only wish they could
have been a little beefier.
The miniships are really nice designs, but I would have preferred that a
pilot would be able to sit in one while they are stored on the ship.
Things that surprised me:
The ship hasn't a single computer panel. I added one for the cockpit (you
gotta at least be able to steer the thing).
No visible means of propulsion. So they fly by sheer wil alone? I haven't
added any engines yet. I'm still pondering over how.
Still, the colors are awesome, the functions are some of the best, and it's
a Holy Grail. Not bad!
