Ed Stauffer was only too happy to provide some assistance to professor Netwiddle when asked to fly supplies for the professor’s latest Tunisian expedition. But on a short flight between dig sites, a sudden, jarring crash hits his right wing, sending the plane into a terrible spin. While fighting for control of the plane, Ed looks to the damaged wing to see what great weight continues to spin the plane despite his efforts to regain control. All his dogfighting experience and exposure to the horror of the trenches does not prepare him for what he sees, for there at the edge of the wing and inching toward him is a horribly disfigured creature wrapped in rotted bandages with claws for hands and two large wings extending from its back. The creature lets out a paralyzing howl that mixes with the wind pulling at its decayed features and with a snarling grimace it continues to advance toward Ed.

Continuing my penchant for a good construction set with some iconic monsters and an appreciation for my first purchase of the 7306 Golden Staff Guardians, I’m forging ahead with the acquisition of the 7307 Flying Mummy Attack that is comprised of a bi-plane, a tall obelisk construction and three figures.

Let’s start off with the supporting star of this set, the obelisk construction is a fairly simple structure standing around 18 bricks high. Right on top of the tower is an aquamarine tinted gem (each set contains a series of elements to be collected, the gem is the element in this set) placed in a 2x2 plate/tile for easy removal (explained later). The colors for the structure are varied (I don’t usually like a lot of colors, but the variation is appropriate for this model) featuring dark blue, black, grey, light brown, light and dark gold (feel free to fill me in on the official names for any of these colors).
The star of the show here is the bi-plane model. The colors for the plane are kept to a minimum with the chief color being the same dark red that was used for the motorcycle body in 7306. The structure is pretty solid and it’s a nice addition to previous bi-plane models such as those from 6345 Aerial Acrobats and 6615 Eagle Stunt Flyer (yeah, I’ll even include the somewhat oversimplified 5928 Bi-Wing Baron which I initially didn’t like but it’s since grown on me). One nice inclusion to this plane that previous models didn’t include is the addition of ‘tommy gun’ elements that add some firepower (true, the 5928 bi-plane did have rifles but the machine guns seem a bit more appropriate to the essence of what is essentially a world war I plane in my opinion). The model also features a swiveling ‘claw’ appendage on the belly that allows the plane to swoop over the obelisk to snatch up the jewel on top.
Stickers included in the set are for the glyphs on the obelisk and to adorn the plane.

Figures included are the Adventurer pilot and two mummies. These are the same mummy torso and face prints from the previously reviewed 7306 set but these figs come with a large hard plastic wing element that fits over the neck peg before attaching the head. The wing elements are nicely contoured to resemble feather layers and they’re well painted in an ancient Egyptian style. The figs come with slightly different headdresses that peak in the front like a hawk beak and have no ‘tail’ down the back (this allows them to be placed above the wings) and two black spears. These new helmets are a very welcome addition to the genre.

Overall this is a pretty good set. I’m not convinced that it’s worth the $20.00 I paid for it (probably closer to around $15-$17) but if you’re only going to invest in a smaller set for this series, this isn’t a bad purchase.

!!! 4x2ReVu Stats !!!
Rating: Five out of eight studs
Pros: Good addition to bi-wing model designs (yes, I’m aware of the 7786 Chase For Scarecrow set but I haven’t had the chance to review it yet). Very cool mummy headdresses and wing elements.
Cons: Needs just a few more pieces or a more substantial obelisk construction to really be worth my 20 clams.
Walletwise: 125 pieces for around $20.
