7621 Indiana Jones and the Lost Tomb, 277 pieces, $20 or $21

Almost ten years after the Adventurers Egypt series (1) paid homage to Indy, Lego has the real licensed deal and it’s quite good. Just like with the Star Wars releases, we get classic movie scenes now, with new movie sets to come later. (2)

Review

Uncommon for a small playset, this one evokes a nearly enclosed room. The interior has some texture and decoration, but would look better if there were more of the dark tan secondary color. The decals are realistic and dull, compared to the colorful Adventurers Egypt decals, and I think this works well.

The brick ratio is good. Mostly tan bricks and plates. Columns use 20 2x2 round bricks. Two 6x12 dark tan plates, Six dark tan 2x2 and one 1x6 tiles. 6 tan 1x4 log bricks. There are a lot of large pieces (good) like 1x8s. Hopefully you have enough 1x4, 1x2, and 1x1 already because there aren’t any coming from this set. I actually like the 1x2x5 bricks where they are used to project columns and butress a wall, but one could wish for actual tan or dark tan 1x1x6 columns.

Golden pieces on the Ark. This color is challenging to mold, resulting in no two pieces colored alike and visible flow lines. I can’t complain about getting “jumper” plates (1x2 with center stud.)

Torches are actually dark brown carrots. Flaming Carrots! I wonder if that’s an in-joke.

The “Action Features”

The jackals topple, bashing out the rear walls, and one of them reveals a skeleton. The skeleton trick is neat the first time, but from a builder’s point of view I would prefer more of something else.

The second feature is the dumping bin that rains snakes on the ark platform. Hope you love snakes, there are 5 red and 5 green ones. The dumping bin effectively uses rubber Technic pieces for hinges. I normally dislike action features, but I’m not a kid, and since these actually made me smile I grant they’re above average.

A final nitpick: the red balls, that are supposed to be axle handles for activating the toppling jackals, just fall off.

Marion Figure

Sure there’s room for lots of Marions in the minifig population. Opportunities to mix her up with Kirsten Dunst and Hermione. But her dress makes her look pregnant and her hair piece is way too big and doesn’t quite fit her head. And her smile - take a closer look - she seems to have a mustache. We’ll ignore all that - she’s a minifig.

Value

No question, this set of 277 pieces is good value for the $20 price point. It offers more than the comparably priced Adventurers 3722 or 5958 from almost ten years earlier. Wonder how that is?

My rating: 8 of 10 for good value, but not extraordinary.
