Hey Batfans!

Just got this set used yesterday for $35 from my local toy consignment shop, a
far better deal than the full $50 MSRP.  Even though the box had been opened, it
didn't look the set had been built as the stickers weren't applied and the small
polybag with Batman's accessories and the two modern guns (oh yeah!) was
unopened.

First, Joker's helicopter:

The color scheme could have been refined a bit more.  Even with the stickers
applied, it doesn't appear very cohesive.  Two sets of the stickers are meant to
add more dark green to the model, but I would have preferred that the parts that
they adhere to be dark green as well since I believe that most AFOL's would
dearly love more parts in this rich, groovy color.

However, being the smaller model it sports quite a few fun functions.  Of
course, both rotors spin and you can open the cockpit.  What makes the model is
the unfolding weapons from the center, the Joker laughing gas bombs
(trans-antifreeze mini-fig heads with Joker face on them) which can be dropped
from the underside, and the rotating spotlight with detachable ladder.  The
simple construction of the ladder with black Battle Droid arms is quite
ingenious.

A positive note on TLG's usage of CG images for box art:

I was expecting the green in Joker's helicopter to be regular green, but I was
very happy to discover that the parts were dark green!  However, even though
this was a nice surprise, it still irks me that they cannot make simple
adjustments to their graphics to better represent what's in the box.

The Batwing & stand:

A lot of nice curves, especially the application of upper & lower 1/4 circle
arches between the body and wings.  A very good selection of the new 3x6 and
3x10 black wing plates as well the shorter curved slope corners.  The rubber
rocket launcher housing is well engineered so that merely opening the mechanism
fires the missle.  The way the rear wing assemblies open upward to so that the
weapons can be deployed is snazzy too.  The opening cockpit is a bit flimsy, and
I can see a lot of kids having to reassemble this part during play.  I was also
a little annoyed at the lack of controls for either craft.  Perhaps Batman and
the Joker fly by telekinesis?

Given that the Batwing sits comfortably on any flat surface, I felt that the
stand should have been eliminated and the parts used to add detail or other
functions to the two vehicles.  All it does is make the Batwing look cool, and
any kids' fertile imagination will come up with ways to do that!  Finally, the
Jack Stone baseplate should have been discarded in favor of an actual baseplate,
which has far more utilitarian applications.

Batman's accessories are very nice, although I'm puzzled about the manacles.
Are they handcuffs or something else?

On the whole, a great set if you can find it on discount!

(...) They're manacles. There was a discussion about it on BrickLink, which has since been purged, but apparently there's a pic of Killer Croc actually wearing them as manacles. Pretty dark for a kid's toy, but representative of the Batman universe, (...) (17 years ago, 9-Nov-07, to lugnet.reviews)
