As a virtual palate cleanser for my previous review, I had the pleasure of
purchasing and building the big green dragon. The Designer sets, IMHO, are the
last bastion of the Lego that was. All the sets in this series have eptomized
the Lego building ethos of complex construction, followed by dismantling and
rebuilding of something else equally complex and cool. This set is a perfect
example. This review is based solely on the construction of the main model. I
bought this set mainly for parts, but it really rocks!
I looked forward very eagerly to this set for many reasons. The dragons of the
Vikings sets had little allure for me since they had too many Bionicle parts for
my tastes. Nothing here but bricks and plates, oh yeah, baby! Even more
fabulous is that the majority of the set is green with lots of dark and lime
green accents. Gravy, baby!
The thrill continued as I discovered that most of the click-joint pieces were in
dark green. All the dark colors so far have been beautifully done and these are
no exception. I sense a dark green mecha in my near future!
The construction of the main model is quite easy for an experienced builder,
especially when you know how to take certain shortcuts, such as making all four
legs at once merely by constructing mirror images of two of the legs from one
side of the body for the other. The same principle can be applied for the wings
as well.
The light brick, with its internal spring-activated mechanism has many wonderful
possibilities. As I built the body, I was very impressed with how the
fiber-optic cable was woven through the modules in order to reach the head. The
only slight drawback here is that in order for the flame part to be able to move
freely as the head and neck are posed, it needs to hang loose and kinda flops
around. It looks GREAT when activated, though, so no biggie!
The use of green ship sails for the wings was a very nice touch. However, I can
see them coming off quite easily during playtime due to the fact that they're
only affixed securely at one of three points.
The overall poseability of the model is really impressive, and I think it would
look superb if properly suspended on fishing line from the ceiling. The legs
don't have much range while the dragon's on the ground, but suspended could be
employed in a number of dragon-ey positions.
The best part of the set however, is the parts. Notable piece amounts:
14 1x2 green tiles!
10 1x4 green tiles
16 1x1 green plates
11 pairs of green 1x3 wing plates
12 1x1 yellow slope bricks
7 1x1 dark green slope bricks
15 1x2 dark green bricks
18 1x2 dark green inverse medium-slope bricks
6 lime green dinosaur tails/tusks
I'll definitely be buying another of these.
