I will start with the positive things first:

The mini-figs of all the characters are very well done.  In particular, the
Patrick mini-fig, with it's non-fixed, turnable head is the stand-out.  I loved
how Gary was done, the lime green cherry piece for the eyestalks was perfect.

The choice of trans-dark pink chef hats for jellyfish was another masterstroke.

Now the negative:

As a huge fan of Lego and Spongebob I looked forward very eagerly to the release
of these sets.  However, I was very, very disappointed with this one.

What happened to baseplates?  Why all the little buildings and vehicles that
don't fit together in any way?  I really dislike this turn in set design as it
feels to me like I'm purchasing a box of a bunch of little sets rather than one
big one.

This was mentioned before, and I had heard about it, but I had forgotten that
the entire top half of Squidward's tiki head is a one-piece of *rap.  What a
cop-out!  Surely the talented designers in the company could have come up with
something better than this?!  Shameful.

All the little "action-oriented" items like Spongebob's bed, the two catapults,
and the jellyfish container should have been sacrificed to make the three
buildings more detailed.  None of these items has any base of reference from the
show that I can recall, and IMHO, are a complete waste.

I think that they should have made separate sets for each house.  This way they
could have larger piece counts (and therefore more detail for each) and it would
have given them more sets to offer.  This way, SpongeBob's pineapple could be a
complete building, not half a fruit.  They did it for Hagrid's hut, isn't
Spongebob worth it too?

Additionally, the sets could have been designed to be attached to each other
when all three were purchased, much like the Castle sets of old.

The final straw in this fiasco were the orange bricks.  The Knight Bus curse has
struck again, as I stared at two very different shades of the same color.  One
kind was the solid, rich color of orange that I knew.  The new kind has a
hideous, see-through candy corn aura to it that just screams with MegaBlock
cheapness.  If this is what's going to happen to the brick with the outsourcing
of production, then the only bright spot is that I'll be saving lots of money
for many years to come.
