I have been using Outlook and Outlook Express quite a long time now (current version is 4.72.3110.5) and I haven't find such problems you have described. The only thing it won't regocnize is when it will start with <URL:> such as <URL:(URL). (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jul-99, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.robotics)

(...) (Sorry if this is off-topic.) The format "<URL:(URL)" is a proposed standard way to embed URLs in normal text according to RFC 1738. If your browser does not handle this, I'm sorry to say that it is broken, and should be fixed. Now, why do we (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jul-99, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.robotics)

Outlook is a mail/news program, not browser. It should be sufficient to recognize based on <http:>, <ftp:>, etc. The <URL:> won't add any information. -et (25 years ago, 16-Jul-99, to lugnet.publish, lugnet.robotics)
