My advice: don't use backgrounds. They take away the attention of the
content.

The coolest way is to use one with cgi on your own server. That way you
won't have adds.
It is kind of difficult to install, and you'll need a server that supports
cgi. Most free servers don't.
I'd use a free guestbook with the minimum of adds.
If you download a good html-editor, like AceHTML (you can get it at
http://www.download.com) you'll get loads of predefined scripts that are
easy to use.
