Several things make it so you can only be logged into one computer at a time.
first, the cookie becomes invalid after about an hour. Second, the
cookie is replaced every 30 seconds while you are using the site (each
time you hit the site it checks, and if at least 30 seconds has elapsed
since you last got a cookie, it creates a new one and gives it to you).
This means, if you login to one machine, then a second one, the second
one will have the valid cookie, the first one will not. This is done
for security purposes, It could be fixed by not changing the cookie and
giving the same one every time to every computer you connect from.
This is much less secure, since if someone gets your valid cookie, it's
like having your username an pw. The way it is now, an imposter
would have to get your cookie (perhaps by packet sniffing) and use it
right away. Even then, as soon as you logged in again that cookie
would be invalid and they would have to snarf the new one. Leaving
the cookie the same for a long period of time (days or forever) would
greatly increase the risk of a compromised cookie being useful. In the
future, SSL will be able to protect the cookie and allow for semi-permanent
ones.

| So, how do I log in from home? I did the name and password thing. It gave me the Set Icon, Edit and all that but when I clicked Upload it went back to like I was logged out. I wasn't logged in at work when I tried at home last night. (...) (23 years ago, 11-Jan-02, to lugnet.publish)
