Not everybody has Javascript enabled, and if they have to fool around with their browser settings every time they want to visit, that'll drive people away if nothing will. Setting up a secondary new box as *.lugnet.org is definitely easier and less problematic than setting it up as *.beta.lugnet.com in the near-term, because of various DNS issues.
