Seems I was a'hearin' that one could use the "bow" bit from the bi-plane Baron

put together a serviceable vessel.

Any of you scurvy sons of the sea want to see what kind of ship can be put
together using existing sets?  Granted, cannon and sails will have to be
improvised, as I wouldn't want to use the great, hulking monster from the
Castle sets.  Or could you?

Let's see what the shipwrights can make under a challenge!

I've done the bi-plane "bow" bit and I'm not sure I care for it. I prefer the
6x7 bow that can be found in a number of places for making small pirate ships
(similiar to the one in the Imperial Trading Post).  The Imperial Trading Post
ship (I'll use Steve Jackson's term "cutter" since that particular ship is
cutter-rigged) is based on two of these to make the bow.  The Castle line Sea
Serpent uses two of these to form the bow and two more for the stern, with the
half-octagon forming the fore and aft castles.

I've made a variety of these cutters using two or three of these to form the
bow.  I'll be experimenting with a more top-heavy mini-galleon design that will
use anywhere from three to four in the front and 4 to 5 in the rear.  I like to
use the Crossbone Clipper square sail or the Armada Flagship lateen sail on
these little guys.  Either works quite well.  Snagging the little sails from
some of the row-boats with sails works, too.  My upcoming Redbeard's Rum-Runner
will have a custom printed sail with ink-jet on canvas (Don Maitz's Captain
Morgan scanned and printed).

The half-octogon works as a bow or stern castle.  I like to put it up front
with a cannon.  Cannon can still be found with the Wild West Weapons Wagon ($5
at TRU on discount).

There's a ten-wide bow piece that can be used, but though I have three of those
plus a deck piece laid in, I haven't done anything with it yet.

I need to get off my duff and start using some of the pieces I've collected to make some smaller pirate ships. Shooting cannon are also available from Europe in a service pack. Buying in bulk through a friend in Europe, I've gotten them for about (...) (25 years ago, 1-Feb-00, to lugnet.pirates)
