Neither! They would be secured to belaying pins to a rail on the inside the hull
above deck. For Lego purposes, using the rail would be okay, but Id be inclined
to use a solid section of rail. If there isnt a solid section, Id tend to
attach the sheets to the side of the hull.
But adding such rigging is going to limit the playability of the ship (or even
the posability!), if thats an issue at all.
There probably are exceptions, but generally, no yard under the main.
Of course, theyre not ropes, but thats another can of worms entirely.
