I have a question. If the red pirate theme mini-figs are Imperial Guards, and
have the flagships and trading ports and all that, why do the blue Soldiers
also have a ship? And why do the soldiers have a "brig"? Isn't that a nautical
term? Wouldn't they be land troops, and just (nautically speaking) cargo for
the Guards? Is there some way to make it work logically, or was Lego just
(heaven forbid) careless?

Ahoy!

I go by the Lego Group's storyline and make up myself for whatever isn't
explained. The blue Soldiers were produced between 1989-1991 and had their
Ship and island fortresses. I consider them American since they have blue
coats and look almost exactly like the Imperial Guards except for some
beard/mustache color differences. The Imperial Guards were produced between
1992-1995 and also had their ships and island fortresses. I call them British
because of their red coats and their ships and forts look more "Imperial" than
the bluecoats.
Hmmm. "Broadside's Brig", I didn't quite know why they called the set that
but thanks to Mr. Kevin Wilson, now we both know ;)
As for historical accuracy, screw it. Lego designed these sets for 5-12
year olds for them to have pirate adventures. They could care less about
historical accuracy, just as long as it's decent and not perfect. Lego just
makes the sets, when you AFOL buy em and bring em home, build what you want.
Waiting for sets that please adults as much as they do kids is like watching
paint dry. Anyways, that's my 2 cents(or pieces of eight, haha).
