Here’s another case your poll does not cover. Susan and I were married before the first LEGO set came into the house. Our neighbors’ children received big LEGO sets every Christmas and one year Susan expressed interest. I bought her a pneumatic set (not a good choice, but I was being a guy...) which she dutifully assembled and put in the the closet.

Then we had children. On Thomas’s third birthday, we gave him the 7745 battery operated train. Two weeks later he wanted gears and motors for crossing gates. Now we rent 24 foot long trucks to take layouts to shows...

Okay, I'm nosy for data.
