well speaking from experince the metal "c" channel does exist in the correct
size and is avalable in lenghths of up to at least 3 ft. the main issue that
someone would really have to contend with is the joints. creating that seemingly
simple fold is a real pain in the butt. another issue that might be less
important to most is the rails get dirty easier and tend to cause conduction
issues. this came up for me with my engine shead. over time the rails would get
dirty and the engines parked in the shead would fail to come out. a track eraser
"cleaner" works but takes conciderable time.
