A number of people have asked what the surface will be like for the
Maxwell's Demons arena. (By the way, this newsgroup is for everyone to post
in, not just for announcements by me!) Since the surfaces are very even, you
should be able to get away with simply taking a reading of the side you
start on, and whenever it changes by more than +/- 5, for instance, (using
percentage mode) you'll know you're on the other side (or possibly off the
edge).

But if you'd like to get a small sample of the surface, go to your nearest
hardware store that sells countertop laminates, and look for the WilsonArt
International line. Usually they'll have sample squares that you can take
home with you.

For White the arena uses D354-60 "Designer white" (also has S1000323 and
0906L in small at the bottom)

For Black the arena has 1595-60 "Black" (also S1000021 and 0617H in small at
the bottom)

As far as the cubes go, you can build these yourself out of six 2x4 bricks
and four tiles (either 2x2 or 1x4 work). Use black LEGO and white LEGO for
the two colours. Here's a simple picture of how to put them together:

Remember, the goal is to get the white cubes onto your own side, and get rid
of the black cubes. And there's no hoarding - only pushing blocks around.
See this post http://news.lugnet.com/org/us/smart/?n=22 for the rules.
(Ignore the 'expert division' at the bottom.)

If anyone has a working robot that they'd like to test at the Grand
Challenge Workshop on April 28th at the Kirkland library - please either
post here or send email.
