I think you're talking about the old 4.5v train tracks-- these came in grey
in <set:6970> see: http://www.brickshelf.com/scans/6000/6970/6970-08.html )
They're 1 stud wide and have 1 toothed edge facing upward.
The monorail tracks (as I believe) are roughly 4? studs wide with a ridge
which has a smooth top, and 2 toothed edges-- one on each side. See:
