Hi John,
Similar items have been used by TRU in their displays over the years. I
can't confirm that's where they came from but that would seem a likely
possibility. Sometimes you see things like that on ebay! I don't think
I've seen any lately that have been as large as the ones you have. As for
the largest brick, I think there was one that was used as a promotion at
some Lego store that was something like 8 feet in length and 4 feet in
height! It was displayed in the mall outside of the store. A picture of it
was available at one time, but I couldn't find a link to it. It was the
largest brick I was ever aware of.
It's great that you found the large bricks in a garage sale. I would love
to find something like that sometime. I imagine that they would be quite
desirable to a lot of AFOL! I think I would display them in my house as
furniture if I owned them. haha It looks like you could use them as seats
although they wouldn't be too comfortable!
