This is something I forgot to talk about at the last meeting...

Saturday, May 18, 2002, was an anniversary for BayLUG...

Back in May of 1998, LEGO released a schedule for its 25th Anniversary
Traveling Truck Tour. In rec.toys.lego, Robery Dye posted the schedule. On
May 18, 1998, I replied to his post with this:

I have an idea. How would San Francisco bay area people like to meet that
weekend at the Show Truck. We could have lunch in the park and just get
together. I would be willing to help organize this "LEGO Fest."

This reply started the planning of the 1998 Bay Area LEGOfest. This event
led up to the discussion of forming a local club, which came to be known as
BayLUG.

There are several current, and some not so current but who may still be
lurking,  BayLUG members who were at this event, and I would like to take
the time to thank these "founding members" for sticking with me over the
years.

Thank you:

This is also the same year I met Uncle Dan. Thanks. :)

And of course I can't forget Gary Louie. I had the honor of meeting Gary at
the LEGOfest. Gary was the mastermind of the "national" LEGOfest on the
evening of the grand opening of LEGOLAND California, set for March 1999.
This was also considered to be the first official meeting of BayLUG.

Unfortunately, Gary passed away before the LEGOfest or the grand opening
took place. This one's for you:

Probably the biggest thanks goes to Zonker Harris, BayLUG co-founder. He was
the one person I collaborated with the most in getting the whole club idea
going. I know at the time he wanted to form a train club like PNLTC, but we
both agreed there wasn't enough train only interest at the time, so we went
with a general club. Well hey, now we've got our train club too! With Mike
Poindexter's leadership we had a layout at the NMRA National Train Show in
San Jose in 2000, the official year BayLTC was formed. Now, with BayLTC's
revival last year, we are going to be showing at GATS this year.

The 1998 LEGOfest seemed like a natural place to bring up the idea of a
local club. Here I was, surrounded by people my own age who liked LEGO as
much, and in many cases more so, as I did. It turns out it was still a
fairly new concept at the time since we are considered to be the fifth LEGO
LUG/LTC formed.

Happy Anniversary BayLUG!

So now we are technically four years old. We have our own newsgroup on
LUGNET, we have been recognized by LEGO Direct, we have been featured four
times in the local newspapers, and we are still going strong. Future plans
include more train shows, BricksWest 2003, and some charity events. BayLUG
has exceeded my expectations. Four years ago, I never thought my dream would
go this far, and it can only go farther.

I also want to thank LUGNET and the AFOL community as well. You are some of
the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of "playing" with. I have been
able to meet practically the entire memberships of GMLTC, PNLTC, SCTLC,
LDraw.org, and LUGoLA, as well as all the people I got to meet at BricksWest
2002. A few of these people are on our own membership roster as honorary
members.

I have started tracking the roots of BayLUG, and my results so far are here:

Thank you all.
