TRAIN SHOWS 2001 - Brainstorming Notes

From VLC Meeting - April 27, 2001

These are primarily Kevin's and my notes from the first ideas session.
I've added a couple of other ideas in the meantime.  This stuff is not
set in stone, or even mud for that matter.  It's only "Firestarter",
to get your creative fires burning.  Take it and run with it.  And
remember, let's talk it out here on the forum wherever possible.
Things will happen a lot quicker that way.

Robin

SHOWS WE WANT TO DO (We're fairly sure about these ones)

Toy Train Operating Society, Richmond
July 31 - Aug 5 (show on the 5th)

Trains 2001, Burnaby (same as last year)
Nov 9 - 12 (show on the 11th)

GENERAL

- Larger layout than Trains 2000 show, probably 12' x 18' or even
slightly larger

- Possibly plan, organize, and build individual complete sections
separately to come together only for the show, as opposed to last time
where each of us contributed to individual sections of the layout (ie.
baseplates, track, monorail, buildings, vehicles, etc.)

- Large switching yard with 4 or 5 long sidings to isolate and
store/display rolling stock when not in operation

- At least two completely separate main lines that can run separate
trains continuously, without intervention

- At least one complete monorail loop, with no "ends" pointing at or
near the edge of the layout (ouch!)

- More track clearance, specifically above and on corners, to
accomodate larger and longer rolling stock

- More open space (country side, farmland, water, etc.) with only
sparse detail, to provide more realism and contrast

- Try for some variations in elevation, perhaps by using other
materials "under" the Lego landscape (structural foam, etc.)

- Avoid running monorail directly above train line for extended
lengths, or crossing train track too much

- Possibility of member's constructing more tables (PNLTC style, like
Dean's) to keep at home, but use in shows

- Entire outside edge of layout to be protected with 4" to 6" high
thin clear lexan (plexiglass) protector

- Signage suspended somehow above layout, perhaps with sponsor's
posters on back of VLC sign

LAYOUT SECTION IDEAS

- Dock Area / Port / Beach:  whales, theodore tugboat, possible
motorized (moving) crane at port, port not necessarily linked directly
to rail or even freight yard, possible grain port (elevators)

- Harry Potter:  Hogwarts Express train, platform 9 3/4 at main
station, Hogwarts school (Castle!), lake w/ monster, whomping willow,
forest, Hagrid's hut, Hogsmeade station?, all enclosed in separate
valley behind mountain.  Hogwarts Express train enters through tunnel
into valley

- Town:  a downtown main street diorama with lots of coordinated
detail, connected buildings, automatically moving trolley car (back
and forth on short line), Dean's automated track crossing, some other
"Top Secret" ideas of Dean's.  Email him for details.

- Passenger Train Station:  A large station linking main train line,
trolley cars, monorail (skytrain), platform 9 3/4 for Hogwarts
Express), possibly with roof, half roof, or just roof framework to
highlight inside detail, lines run mostly straight through, with
perhaps 1 or 2 terminus tracks.

- Freight Yard:  Container crane (motorized?), trucks, containers

- Farmland / Countryside:  livestock, herds of cows, horses, possible
"mad" cows (even burning piles of animals - kidding!?), fences

- Airfield:  a smaller airfield as opposed to a large airport, smaller
planes, perhaps air show, suspended planes (probably from above
somehow), classic large rounded roof hangar, windsock, blimp, etc.

- Factory / Industrial area:  chemical plant (lots of pipes, tanks,
etc.), twin tanks (from last show), trucks

- Bridge(s):  Large bridge spanning across 2' to 3' gap between
tables, perhaps suspension or cable stayed bridge, maybe other smaller
bridges elsewhere in layout

- Mountain:  On one side, Harry Potter land, on the other, a gondola
(motorized?) from valley to mountain top, skiiers?, mountain climbers,
hang gliders (or paragliders!) launching and landing below, mountain
railway segment (bridge, tunnel, snowshed)

ROLLING STOCK

9 Volt (Main Lines):
- Hogwarts Express:  Engine, tender, several coaches, possible
baggage/crew car
- Metroliner:  Engine, several passenger cars, club car, Robin's
baggage or cargo car, tail (false engine) car
- Thomas (the tank engine):  Engine (possibly with Lego face this
time!), plus "Troublesome Trucks" and "Brake Van"
- 4565 Alternate Steam Engine
- "My Own Train" big blue engine with tender
- Larry P's switcher
- Dean's SD1 road diesel
- Possibly another passenger train
- Freight Engine?
- Freight Cars:  caboose, Larry's hopper cars, articulated container
cars, grain cars, box cars, work train (crane, etc.), tankers

9 Volt (Other):
- Smaller trolley car to run automatically back and forth on separate
short line through station, and down street in town

Monorail:
- Skytrain (Vancouver colours)

VANCOUVER STUFF

To possibly incorporate into the layout, where appropriate:
- Seabus in harbour
- Canada Place
- Cruise Ships
- Lion's Gate suspension bridge, or Alex Fraser cable stayed bridge
(make the large bridge look like one of Vancouver's more recognizable
bridges; Port Mann, Patullo, Burrard, Second Narrows, Queensborough)
- Massey Tunnel (car tunnel running under the water between Richmond
and Ladner)
- Harbour Centre (dark office building with round, rotating restaurant
on top)
- Old Woodward's sign from downtown
- Skytrain (monorail)
- Gastown (cobblestones, steam clock, trolley, tiny quaint shops)
- BC / GM Place?
- Science World golf ball
- Planetarium
- Grouse Mountain (Gondola)
- West Coast Express Train?
