Well I agree with your list of + and - but I disagree with your conclusion.
This is a great TOY ... my 10 year old son *LOVES* it; he comes home from
school with ideas for clips and spends the rest of the day on them.
He's found that the 'artifacting' (he calls it 'the little dots') can
be improved dramatically by increasing/adjusting the lighting of scenes
which is typically the way to remove graininess.
The quality of the clips he's done have improved. The simplicity of the
user interface and the simple to understand tutorials have allowed him to
make several 3 minute movies (a star wars one, a dino one, a TWISTER one)
and he's added 'bloopers' at the end of his films which are amusing.
The simple stop frame animation makes it seem like the minifigs are
really alive and ... he loves it !
So ... although there are the negatives you mention, I think they are
because the studio is intended to be a TOY and not a pro studio for LEGO
animators.
My son's excitment over making his own movies that he is very proud of
showing is, to me, the best review any TOY can get.
So, although, the system has traded off 'picture quality' and features
for simplicity and TOY 'playability' by young users, I think the tradeoff
is well worth it.
If you want a professional quality video studio, you might want to look
elsewhere. If you want a really first class fun TOY that will excite the
imagination of a young film maker, this is 'imagination catalyst in a box'.
