Angelo,
There is a running theory, that the reason solar calculators have an off
button is to "dump" all the excess electrons. In reality the "off"
button on those calculators should be called the "flush" or "dump" key.
The idea is simple, if you don't remove all the excess electrons; they
build up over time, and ~could~ create enough back pressure between the
collector and the LCD device and ... well...EXPLODE.
Now, this has only happened once or twice. to be fair it is a rare
occurrence, and mostly with the older calculators. The solution was the
"dump" switch. modern day (circa 1993) calculators forgo the "off" (or
flush) button by substituting an auot-off feature. which really is just
an auto flush feature. What you have to be careful of; is when you flush
the electrons, that they don't spill all over the floor. if you manage to
spill a lot of electrons on a smooth flat surface, then they could create
a more recent hazard; along the lines of what would happen if you put
marbles all over a tile floor.
This is actually a very interesting topic, My research has shown that the
"auto flush" feature on current production calculators has led to a whole
new industry in some institutions. The lawyers got involved after a
tragic accident some years ago and suggested that large institutions
remove all the "slippery" electrons that can gather and become a potential
hazard. Thus this machine was "created" and is now common place.

You can check for yourself, stay late one night after work and you'll see
this machine, pulling up all the excess electrons from the floor. The
machine is usually plugged into an AC outlet as a way to utilize the
"Building Ground" to return the electrons to "neutral"
I could go on, I'm working on thesis for this very topic. The reason I
point this out is cause the Lego Solar Cell has the same potential to
explode. I cant say for certain, cause other daily chores tie up so much
of my time, but the second reason I got the solar cell from lego was to
study how Lego circumvents the Electron build-up potential.
When I have a spare moment I will take a closer look. For now, Abby is
not allowed to play with that Lego. Not until she is old enough to
understand the potential danger.
