Well I was looking at the 45 degree crossing idea and I've discovered a bit of
a problem.  Its not just two straight tracks that have to be modified, but the
four switchs as well.  The problem is the switchs interfer with each other.

The turn off parts of the switchs on separate lines interfere with each other
by on stud.  To fix this one stud has to be cut off the last tie of the turn
off.

Why is there never a simple solution. :-(

What if you backed each pair of switches off by one straight piece, then
manufactured some crazy crossing out of say, metal stock glued to a piece of
thin plastic?  It wouldn't be pretty, but it would mean you wouldn't need to
modify four switches and you could adapt to crazy geometry.
