It is a Vestas-80, a 1.8 kW turbine with an 80 metre rotor diameter, and
total height of 117 metres. Really big! It rotates somewhere in the order
just under 16 r/min. It has a giant Ontario Power Generation logo on it, not
the normal VESTAS logo with blue stripe.
It is just fine to stand right under it, too. The fence that surrounds the
Nuclear Plant also surrounds the tower of the turbine, but it is very close
to the base and a public path walks directly next to this fence, and therby
directly under the turbines blades.
Take 401 to exit 399 Brock Road. Turn right (south) at the
lights on Brock Road.
Now you have two choices of parking lots. Both are about the same distance
from the turbine. I recomend proceeding south on Brock Road to Bayly Street
(about 500 metres). Then you turn right onto Bayly Street, until you get to
Liverpool Road (about 1.5 kilometres). Then turn left onto Liverpool Road,
and proceed right to the end of that street (about 1.5 kilometres). It will
terminate at the waterfront, and there is a small parking lot (maybe 40
cars) there for free. You can park there, and then walk along the pathway on
the waterfront over to the turbine.
Alternativley, you can go go straight south on Brock Road almost all the way
to the Nuclear plant. Just before the road curves, I think, there will be a
fenced-in parking lot on your right. If you go in there, you can also walk
over to the turbine although it is a little bit of a hike (hilly terrain and
the parking lot is a little scary).
I think the first thing you will notice is how dissapointingly quiet the
turbine is. For its size, you would really expect to hear a decent "Whump...
whump... whump..." as the blades come around. That is not the case, though!
All you can hear, is a gentle wooshing noise, almost like a static-noise
from a TV or radio. And you have to stand real close to it to even hear
that.
I always like how whenever I go there you can see how everyone who is out
for a walk, just passing by, always stops to look at it. It really is an
impressive machine.
By the way, it is North America's largest wind turbine. Have fun.
