Yep--the 5 display groups at the Hobby Show got together at the show and decided
that the 'new rules' for displaying at the hobby show--i.e. the monetary outlay
for tables/electricity, as well as the dual tier system they had for
displayers--i,e, the steam engine guys before were given financial compensation
as well as their electricity and tables until this year, whereas the Meccano,
LEGO and other guys were not paid but given the tables/electricity, and this
year the steam engine guys weren't given money but still got their
tables/electricity for free, whilst the other displayers had to pay for both
tables and electricity, compounded with the issue that we, as displayers, were
blatantly lied to regarding the two tier system for displayers--"Oh, all
displayers are treated the same...", and compounded with that was the apparent
"we really don't care if you're here or not" from the show staff when I went and
talked to them about the various issues. I'm not really sure if all displayers
are 'boycotting' the show next year, but this was the intent of everyone at the
meeting, particularly the meccano guys--they were really not happy when they
found out about the two tier system for displayers, and basically lead the
meetings for trying to resolve the issues with the show staff.
I hate getting involved in 'soap opera' like issues and, for the most part,
didn't have a huge issue with the outlay for the electricity--considering that
all of you contributed to the 'we need 'lectricity at the LEGO booth'
foundation, but the additional planning to pull it all off wasn't appreciated,
especially sice we were notified of the change virtually last minute.
Thankfully I could rely on a good friend to take care of the tables because that
was a huge concern. All things considered, I'm impressed that all of you pulled
it all together like you did.
Anyway, when I first contacted Doug at the toy, train and doll show about
allowing more than the train layout to be shown--much like our display at the
hobby show--he was enthusiastic. Tables/chairs/'lectricity all provided--no
bother. So we'll give that a whirl this year and see how it goes.
