Hi folks,
So, tonight after we got back to Toronto, Derek and I were chatting about
concepts and we came up with this:

It's basically a concept where there is a Common River which everyone should
contribute modules on the North and South bank of a river valley. In the middle
are common river modules.
Some of the ideas raised at the get together this afternoon suggested:
-A design which allowed for easy expansion
-A way to build modules where some builders might not have to come to every
event.
-A design that allowed for relatively simple connection to other layouts, eg
NMRA 2007
The idea is that the layout would start with a width of three or four modules
"Initial Base Modules". As time went on, builders could join onto the ends as
"Expansion". The expansion modules, further away from the hills and city core,
are more free form for builders with less bricks.
Benefits:
-Affords a fantastic perspectives, especially from ends and down from hilltops.
Forces depth (eg, inwards minimum three modules)
-Encourages people not to touch (as they have to look "inward" and "down")
-The top level train track doesn't seem forced. Has places for bridge builders
(eg JohnG)
-Encourages terrain (train6 looked really good with all that on it)
-Expansion room for more builders and interconnection.
-Continues concept of "three layer" track operation: Sewer level (under water),
Street Level, Top Level (on hill)
Difficulties:
-Encourages terrain (train6 building was more terrain than buildings)
-Everyone has to contribute River modules. There may be a way to simply the
design to build a generic module which can be flattened easily into one or two
paper boxes for shipping, by reducing the design to a top, a bottom, and some
posts.
-Requires a long reach for that pink Top Level Train run.
What do you guys think? Derek is planning to put up some actual track layouts
which might fit in the area and I would encourage JeffVW to try them out
too--maybe we can see if the shape is workable in that space?
