diffrentiates one case from another?

It needs to be written in the standard sig format -- two hyphens at the
beginning of a line, followed by a space character, followed by a newline
character.  (It "worked" before in cases like the one quoted above because
it wasn't looking for the newline endcap...i.e., it shouldn't have been
truncating lines beginning with "-- " and doesn't now unless the line also
stops there.)
