Sam, Stear, Spike, and Sean Cleer were brothers who owned a dude ranch,
called the 4-S Ranch, in the Canadian Rockies. Their business was staying • in
the black but barely.

One day, a family discussion led to how they might improve and attract • more
city folks. They knew that they had the horses, beef cattle and well • planned
activities for the patrons. Yet the meals they served were not diversified
enough. Checking their finances they realized they couldn't afford to add,
look after and feed chickens and/or pigs. Besides, many city folk were
vegetarians. They agreed to pursue various alternatives.

Sam took proposals from local vegetable gardens. Sean contacted companies • in
Florida, California, and Hawaii for quotes on fruits. Spike got prices
across Canada from Alberta's Taber corn to Prince Edward Island's renowned
potatoes.

Stear discovered a strange alternative. In British Columbia he found out
about the huge kelp masses that grow off the Pacific coast of North • America.
He met Shell Fischer, owner of Mother's Kelper Food Factory, in Vancouver.
In a very brief time, Stear was wooed and plied. He was taken on a boat • and
allowed to dive in the Pacific to see the kelp. He was astounded that it
grew like trees and there were vast quantities available. He was shown how
the kelp was processed and prepared for shipping. It reminded him of the • way
his mother preserved pickles and jams in sealers. He was impressed. What • was
more impressive was the price! Much, much cheaper than local vegetables • and
it included the farming, processing, and shipping of kelp to the 4-S • Ranch.
He wanted to taste a portion but Shell insisted that he take a whole jar • of
kelp home with him for the family to taste. Stear told Shell that as far • as
he was concerned it was a go but he would send him a fax as soon as he
discussed it with his brothers.

Once home, Stear gathered his brothers to tell them his good fortune. They
all agreed that the price was well within their means. Stear said he • didn't
have time to taste it but he brought a sample for all to taste. The table
was set, the jar opened, and portions served. Instantly upon chewing, like
geysers in unison, they all gagged and spewed out the kelp. It was • horrible
disgusting stuff!

Stear was devastated, very embarrassed and angry.Immediately he went to • the
ranch office to be alone and cool off. While he was there he sent the
following fax to Shell:

Can not sea trees for the 4-S.
