And the US Mil, in the incarnation of NARPA is funding exoskeleton research
to the tune of mumble mumble million $$.
In my fairly limited understanding WRT exoskeletons, the main stumbling
block is the interface and ruggedness. They can make exoskeletons, no
problem; been doing it for nigh on 50 years. It's getting them to obey
properly, and respond to motion without over-correcting or
under-compensating. I strongly doubt we'll see functional mecha before we
understand the brain well enough to make (even a prototype) neural interface.
